The NSI Inspection Centre administers compulsory standards specifications through technical assessment and certification for fish, fishery products, canned fish and canned meat products under the Standard Act 18. of 2005, with the main office located in Walvis Bay and satellite office in Lüderitz.

Integrity, impartiality and confidentiality form cornerstones of the inspection process and is reinforced using competent technical personnel, provided with ongoing training to ensure that the required standards are maintained.

The NSI Inspection Centre is the Competent Authority (CA) as per the delegation by the relevant ministry for fish and fishery products to the European Union market.

To ensure international recognition of its services, the Inspection Centre is accredited by the Southern African Development Community Accreditation System (SADCAS) to ISO/IEC 17020, the international standard that specifies requirements for the competence of bodies performing inspection, through annual assessments.

The NSI Inspection Centre is classified as a Type A Inspection body as it provides third-party inspections and is not involved in the manufacture or design of the products that it inspects, cementing the inspection body’s fulfilment of the requirements for impartiality, independence and consistency in the execution of its inspection activities.

Specific Services the Inspection Centre provides include:

  • Assessment (including in-depth inspection based on HACCP principles) and surveillance services of processing establishments, vessels and cold stores.
  • Sampling and assessment of raw materials and final products (mainly fishery products and canned meat).
  • Issuing of Certificates of Conformity against regulatory requirements for import and export consignments.
  • Provision of technical advice on the administration and interpretation of compulsory standards specifications, as well as national and international food standards and legislation
